Fantasy WR rankings

1. Randy Moss- Yeah, everyone has Andre Johnson or Fitz as the #1 but take into account what we've seen in pre-season so far. Warner looks average and Johnson will no doubt be solid but bitten by the injury bug. Now did anyone see Brady heaving the ball to Moss in game 1? once his timing is established there is nothing keeping Moss from prominence.

2. Andre Johnson- As long as he is healthy, he is an animal.

3. Fitzgerald- although Warner is a concern for me it really doesn't matter who throws him the ball.

4. Calvin Johnson- Regardless who is at the helm, the Lions will be playing from behind and throwing often to guess who?

5. Reggie Wayne- The number one guy now without Marvin and a healthy Peyton is back. Remember Peyton was hurt last year and it showed.

6. Greg Jennings- He has the 4th easiest schedule against DB's this year in a balanced offense with a QB who can throw.

7. Anquan Boldin- His red zone threat puts him up there along with his toughness.

8. Marques Colston- Obviously, the number one WR on a pass happy team.

9. Steve Smith- If that shoulder is really healed, then he is the only option on this team. Deangelo Williams will not come close to 20 TD's and teams will focus on him.

10. T.O.- He will ask for the ball and he will get it. Buffalo brought him in to use him extensively and they will.

11. Vincent Jackson- The Chargers are primed for a Super Bowl trip and face a weak division. VJ is the #1 WR here and will get plenty of touches.

12. Roddy White- He has the 7th easiest schedule againts DB's and a good QB throwing to him. Only problem is if Matt Ryan runs into the sophomore slump.

13. Wes Welker- Brady is back and will look for old reliable often.

14. Tj Houshmendzadeh- Faces the 10th easiest schedule against DB's and the Running game has the #1 easiest schedule in the NFL. Hasselbeck is healthy this year and will use his new toy.

15. Brandon Marshall- even with Orton back there, I expect Denver to be down often with their horrible defense and have to throw often. His sheer number of touches I think puts him up here still.

16. Roy Williams- though not sold on him, teams will have to focus on the Running game and leave Roy in single coverage often.

17. Santonio Holmes- He may have had his bust out party in the Super Bowl. Think Ben is comfortable with him now? Hines is older and wearing down.

18. Chad Johnson- Healthy Palmer, finally the unquestioned #1, a year until contract time. Those add up to Ocho being as focused as ever. This is his shot and he knows it.

19. Dwayne Bowe- I am not at all sold on him and Coach Todd Hailey recently called him out. The fact that he is their only receiving threat puts him here.

20. Deshaun Jackson- Philly will open it up a bit more with Jeremy Maclin to take some pressure off DJ. We will see how Westbrook heals up which would help DJ's cause.

QB Rankings for 2009- Top Ten

1. Tom Brady- Everywhere I look I keep seeing projections putting Brees ahead of him. Yes, New Orleans throws quite often, but how can anyone put him ahead of a healthy Brady? Fact is, I don't see Brees having to throw as much now that they are committed to RB Pierre Thomas. A true RB instead of Bush. The roles I think actually reverse here. I believe Brady may throw a bit more that normal for the Pats. Maroney can't get through a season healthy and Taylor although still going is not a break away threat.

2. Drew Brees- As I said above, an established true RB will not force Brees to throw 35 times a game.

3. Peyton Manning- Marvin is gone and in his place is Wayne whom has more speed and is committed to being the "man". Taking Wayne's spot is Gonzales who looks to be a complete replica of Wayne in the younger years. Since Addai has had health issues and a rookie is their fallback, I see Peyton throwing as much as last year. Peyton has the 7th easiest schedule against the pass so that means lots of numbers.

4. Phillip Rivers- LT back and healthy will keep the defensive focus on the running/flare pass game instead of those down field. The emergence of Malcom Floyd last year and having Chambers back gives Rivers more options after he was doing just fine with only V.Jax and Gates.

5. Aaron Rogers- If Ryan Grant shows up this year, that could mean a continuation of the great numbers Rogers put up last year amidst the pressure he was under.

6. Kurt Warner- Although he scares me due to the whole hip situation. I didn't hear a peep from him during OTA's and with only Hightower and Wells in the backfield, I thing things are not so dependable for Arizona.

7. Brett Favre- IF HE PLAYS! Which I think we all know he will, look at the options this guy will have compared to last year. Think AP is good for at least 5 TD's on screen/flare passes? How about Percy Harvin? Favre will not have to create as much as he had to last year and will have a reliable set of weapons behind him.

8. Tony Romo- I think the release of TO was great for Romo. A quiet clubhouse with motivated Roy Williams and reliable Witten coupled with the 3 headed running game will offer Romo the stability he needs.

9.Donovan Mcnabb- Especially if Westbrook does not return as his old self after 2 surgeries, I think Mcnabb could throw as much as he ever has. A new back-up RB takes away the safety net Mcnabb had in Buckhalter.

10. Carson Palmer- Plamer is the forgotten QB whom is not even making other top 10's. He is healthy, commited to the off season, and now has Coles to throw to. Ocho Stinko says he is actually making an effort this year and C. Benson was a top ten back the last 7 games of last season. Palmer will throw a lot and the Bengals seem to be slipping in under the radar.

Fantasy Running Back top 40

This is only a preliminary ranking since camp has yet to even start for most teams. Barring injuries and any major shake up's, it should hold somewhat steady.

1. Adrian Peterson- Think the Favre show and Percy Harvin in the Wildcat are going to keep defenses from paying all their attention to him?

2. Matt Forte- He is a pass catcher in an offense which has a weak receiving core. I think the Bears do the same as last year where he caught 63 for 477. The addition of Cutler is nothing but a bonus for Forte.

3. L.T.- Somewhat of a risk at this spot I know. However, look at the upside. Merriman returns which means a revamped defense. Denver has gone from bad to worse and faces him twice. Oakland has yet to make a mark in the division and the Chiefs are rebuilding. Add to that games against the Browns and Bengals and you have some solid numbers forLT. Sproles will help as well.

4. Frank Gore- Only because of pure workload does Gore get in the top 5. Well, that and the addition of the drafts top WR. Still does not solve the QB issues but if he can stay healthy he will put up monster numbers. Problem is he may have games where he gives you peanuts. He may be a bit high here, but only the next two guys could outpace him in terms of volume.

5. Michael Turner- Was anyone really surprised at his production last year? He was well known in San Diego and will again be a big focal point of the Offense. Add Tony Gonzalez and now defenses have other worries. A big year may be in store.

6. M. Jones Drew-Everywhere I read it people are high on MJD. Who gives a shit if he is now "The guy"? What are the Jags other Offensive weapons? They just traded Northcutt and have nothing to keep opposing defenses at bay. Like Gore, I will give him this high since he is not in a time share situation and the volume will produce big numbers TOTAL. The risk is his average is great but won't win games. Beware of this guy I say.

7. Chris Johnson- I don't see the sophomore slump for this guy. One more year in this O with time to prepare is scary! He may be in the top five if it were not for Lendale jacking his TD's.

8. Clinton Portis- Haynesworth=more Portis. Look for the Offense to be on the field al ot more this year. Betts is still a pain in the ass, but Portis has proven he is not yet done.

9. Marion Barber- going back to the TD guy role he had with Julius Jones, there is no reason to think he can't score 13 or possibly more. Felix Jones has proven himself and this offense can be potent when driving down field.

10. Steve Slaton- The guy is talented and Houston knows how to expose that talent. Andre Johnson healthy is only going to up the ante for Slaton.

11. S. Jackson- As in my previous post, S. Jax is up for a monster year if he can stay healthy. He is the only weapon the Rams have and would be higher if not for a lack of offense around him. His O-line has been upgraded and he very well should surpass this ranking. However, it is the Rams and with defenses keying of SJax there is no guarantee he will stay healthy.

12. B. Westbrook- This is extremely low for Westbrook, but I put him here for good reason. Anyone hear a peep from Philly on Westbrook and his 2 surgeries this past year? It has been a steady decline in terms of body issues for Westbrook and it is no wonder. I love the guy and if during camp he looks healthy then he should jump 3-4 spots.

13. Deangelo Williams- This is a guy I do not go any higher on. He will not reproduce his 20 TD year, and J. Stewart is reportedly having problems.

14. R. Brown- The addition of Pat White in the Wildcat will help the value of Brown. I don't think many people were scared of Pennington out wide. He seems to be ready for a heavier workload after a season where he excelled anyone's expectations after surgery.

15. Brandon Jacobs- No more Ward means he is truly the man. But can he stay healthy? He has yet to rush the ball more than 219 times in a season and his hard nose bang up style does not help matters.

16. Pierre Thomas- In this offense, defenses will be focused on stopping the pass monster Brees. Pierre could quietly turn out to be a top 10 RB this season if he can score.

17. Kevin Smith- Detroit

18. Darren Mcfadden- He may have a great season coming off some injuries, but the fact Oaklands backfield is crowded does not help his value. He is a great #2 but not worth #1 money.

19. Thomas Jones- Think Kellen Clemens or Sanchez are going to keep defenses at bay? He is old and slowing despite a solid year last season. However, I attribute it to Favre and not to him all of a sudden realizing how to be a great rusher.

20. Derik Ward- A timeshare and a revamped offense make him a solid number two but no more.

21. Ryan Grant- IF!!!! he can return to the guy we saw two years ago, Grant could surprise big time. He is worth every risk and if you can get him do so. I would venture to put him as high as 15 but questions remain. Wait and see what camp produces.

22. Joe Addai- Think they drafted Donald Brown because of their confidence in Addai? He has surprised before and you can't count him out but for now I will until proven otherwise.

23. Larry Johnson- Being in such a shitty situation really hurts LJ. We don't know how high his workload will be and you saw how defenses keyed on him last year.

24. Willie Parker- The guy can still run but goes dry at the goal.

25. Reggie Bush- Who knows what this guy decides to do between Kim Kardashian's but cheeks? Want to play some football Reggie?

26. Jamal Lewis- He will be in for a heavy workload, but will be down in most games having to air it out which hurts his value.

27. Cedric Benson- This is the steal of the draft!!!!!!!! He has been given #1 status, Carson is back, Ocho gives a shit, and Benson closed out the year as one of the leagues hottest rushers.

28. Marshawn Lynch- The suspension hurts his value but once back he should be a monster with TO there to relieve the pressure. Once he is back, could be a top 5 scorer.

29. Johnathan Stewart- Timeshare does not help but he did show some potential of being able to unseat Deangelo Williams if Williams falters.

30. Lendale White- He will again jack the TD's and be a solid 10 point guy. A guy you can count on to give you average.

31. W. Mcgahee 32. K. Moreno 33. B. Wells 34. L. Mcclain 35. J. Jones 36. L. Washington 37. Felix Jones 38. D. Brown 39. A. Bradshaw 40. C. Taylor.

Steven Jackson and Brandon Marshall

Will Steven Jackson be back? After being a nothing close to his healthy self, Steve Spagnuolo seems hell bent on giving teams nothing but a full dose of S. Jax. Which is good since the Rams have nothing else to throw at teams. This is good news for Fantasy owners of Jackson but it may come at a cost. Given the fact they are going to use Jackson heavily, what is going to stop opposing teams from putting 8 in the box? Also, what kind of wear will being the only offense put on Jackson's body? If he can stay healthy, it still does not mean we should go overboard. Look at what happened to Frank Gore last year. A similar situation where teams simply attacked Gore on every down. He is definitely worth the risk.

Brandon Marshall says "FUCK YOU DENVER"! At least that's what he said during his traffic stop two years ago. The Denver situation can't get any worse. It may have been two years ago, but I have yet to see a statement explaining how he no longer feels that way. Is there any way Denver keeps a guy who will not most likely give 100% and will opt out first chance he gets anyway? How about the fans? Are they going to dish out the cash to go see him given he is the headliner? Probably not, Denver fan has gotten the shaft this season and the best way to make a statement would be to not show up until the team gets it's act together. Not that it is all on management, of course it falls more on the players but it is the organization's responsibility to make them happy as long as they produce. Would any other company succeed if they sold their best products to a competitor?

Santonio Holmes is gangsta

Santonio recently stated that he used to sell drugs when he was 6 or 7 years old and no longer does pot. Yeah, I remember once when I was about six how me and the boys got rolled up on by some dudes on hot wheels wanting to jack us for our dope. Thing is they didn't know we had loaded super soakers in our Thundercat undies. Yeah, we broke them off real proper. Santonio, you are a Wide Receiver, not 50 cent. I know it helps to come off gangster and hard but dude, at least make it believable.

NFL Policies

The Commissioner says he is going to take his time in the Vick ruling on when and if he plays football again. Now I have already spoken about this but it seems like it is going too far after the Stallworth decision. At this point, it seems to me like Vick is the child everyone loves to beat on. You have Stallworth who was sentenced to a whole 30 days in prison for making the decision to drive drunk and possibly high. Nobody forced him into making that choice and a man died because of his decision. Yes he is out of football, but that seems like the actual punishment in place of what our wonderful court system handed to him. Then you have Vick, whom has served a year in prison for the death of some dogs, and now is being given a further sentence on when he will be allowed to play football. As I said before, I know to many there is no difference, but a human life is worth less than a dog?? It is good to know we have our priorities straight.

Friday Quick news

T.O. is going to return to the show nobody is watching "Superstars". Apparently another "celebrity" contestant was hurt and T.O. is making a return with his pimp, err partner Joanna Krupa.

Joe Jurevicius is suing the Browns for causing his stapf infection. He says they did not use sterile practices and used the same instruments on multiple athletes without cleaning them. Now that is a quality organization. You are talking about shit that even some High School programs don't allow. I see the minimum wage attendants at World's Gym wiping down weights throughout the day and you are telling me the medical staff in Cleveland is reusing medical tools?

Reports are that Favre purchased a home in Minnesota......I don't know why this is even news but.....

My First.

I finally received my firt HATER! It's like losing my virginity all over again. So, in honor of this moment I am posting it up only this one time. I am also posting up my response. Please enjoy everyone and I promise this is the one and only time I will do this. I mean come on, didn't you show off the first chick you...Uh, maybe not, but here it is anyway.

David's Comment:
For someone who thinks the Broncos are a laughing stock should look at their own blog. What a pathetic excuse for writing. You should apologize to the english language.

Response:
AWWWWW! My first hater. You are obviously an angry Bronco fan. How about this, if you are going to come back with "dude you can't write and don't know english" then at least learn proper sentence structure. I know you never finished the ol GED but lesson #1..The English language is not a person so therefore I can't apologize to it. #2, after the work stock you need a pronoun of some sort...maybe.. you, they, I, etc. Does stock look at the blog???? #3 If you have not figured it out yet English is CAPITALIZED. Ironically the only sentence you were almost correct on was the pathetic excuse for writing. Sorry your team is going to be in the basement for the next few years but thanks for the visit. The whole point of a blog is opinion numb nuts. Please come back and bash me some more so that I may teach you how to use the English language. (Or at least use spell check!)

Where will they go?

Brandon Marshall's agent says the Broncos have agreed to trade him. As with yesterday, both him and Plaxico now seem to be prone to join a team within the month. So, where will they go?

For Marshall, the no brainer fit is Chicago. He gets re-united with Cutler and the Bears definitely have the cap room. I don't see how he goes elsewhere. The Jets are a bad fit due to the fact he is not going to want a rookie or Clemens throwing to him in a run first offense. The Bucs could be interested in him but why go there when he knows Cutler and they can pretty much get rolling immediately. Looks like the Bears are Super Bowl contenders if they do pick him up.

For Plax, the Jets have stated they don't want him anymore (supposedly) which is a way of saying they do want him. However, I think he goes Tampa due to the fact that he knows Derik Ward, will have a veteran QB tossing to him (Leftwich). And will have another receiver and tight end to take the focus off of him. The Bucs also have the money to shower him and they are looking to stave away all out rebuilding until Freeman is ready. The Ravens are a possibility but I think he winds up in Tampa.

Off season Questions

What is turning out to be one of the more interesting off seasons, Brandon Marshall has now requested a trade from Denver. If anyone saw the news on Friday, they may recall that Marshall was seen leaving the facility with boxes in hand. Seems like a definitive statement to me. Only problem is he just had Check Spellinghip surgery and there seems to be no real gauge of how he has recovered. I am sure at his age he is good to go but it is always a risk taking any player off of surgery. There should be no lack of interest and fantasy wise this could only help Marshall owners if he does go somewhere else.

Plaxico Burress' court date has been pushed back and it looks like he will be okay to play the season. Here is another guy who can instantly make a team a contender if put in the right situation. All they would have to do is buy him a trigger lock and holster.

Irvin giving advice to Favre

Irvin says Favre is 100 years old and should hang up the cleats for good. Nothing like an ex-con drug addict who jumps on any chance he can to floss about himself to give advice. Especially when it comes to retirement. Dude has a reality show which is turning out to be stolen from a few guys who brought the idea to him a few years ago. He opens his ignorant yap to anyone who will print it and has exchanged cocaine for attention. I get what he is saying but how about someone with more respectability giving their take.

Truth comes out

A few interesting comment came out over the weekend.

Ochostinko stated he did not lift one weight or do one bit of training last off season because he was focused on his contract issues and getting out of Bengal hell....Nothing like showing your maturity and work ethic. Great idea, let me sacrifice a season, risk injury (which he did deal with) and prove all the hacks right by not doing anything. He is a player on the downside and Carson seems happy without him.

Jerry Jones missed his calling in life by being a team owner. He was quoted as saying he is interested in bringing Adam "Pacman" Jones back to Dallas. Why is he an owner when he really would make a great prison Warden? The guy loves taking on problem children and somehow thinks he can change them.

Favre is wondering if his arm is ready or will be ready to come back and play. I was a big supporter of Favre and defended his actions, but I now believe the haters who say he loves the drama. Make a decision and let your play talk. He is destroying his rep with the constant back and forth.

Leinart growing up?

So it seems Matt Leinart is trading in the pink vodka for a playbook. Instead of banging every So-Cal chick that walks and glossing over himself he is actually finding a mentor in no one else but another super model banging QB in Brady. Although Brady can actually do that since he is already a Hall of Fame QB. Apparently they both worked out together on the UCLA campus where Leinart took pointers from Brady on mechanics and using his noggin for once. I wonder if the Ryan Leaf comparisons had anything to do with it? Or maybe he is finding his celebrity slipping and wants it back but realized he might have to produce to be a star this time around. Either way it is good news for Cardinal fans whom need that future QB since Warner is on his last years. Fantasy wise he may be a decent late late round pick up in a keeper league but nothing more until he proves otherwise.

Westbrook Surgery not so minor

Reports from Philly are that the procedure Westbrook had on his ankle is not as minor as a bone spur but not necessarily major surgery. Also, the team source stated that the knee scope he had earlier was not as minor as reported also. No shit! Even with teams being ultra secretive about injuries, everyone knows that the use of Westbrook was bound to take it's toll eventually. After his issues last season it was apparent he was starting to slowly break down. Westbrook has heart and is a great player, but it looks like the beginning of the end. Just when they trade Buckhalter too. Fantasy wise he is a scary proposition right now because we really won't know how well he is until week 1. Even if he is healthy it is risk because of his work load and there is no clear cut stud behind him. I think this hurts Philly's chances at making that Super Bowl run this year even though it is very early to write anyone off.

Vince Young wants trade

So VY wants to be the man again. He is now talking trade since he believes he should be the starter for the Titans. The guy does have talent no doubt, but he is not a starting QB. He had his chance, then had a meltdown. He could possibly have success in a "Wildcat" offense or a run first team. But given that it is only a matter of time before Defenses shut down the gimmick Wildcat , he really has limited options. Maybe if he were a little bit more humble and didn't believe in his self hype he could have realized he needed time to grow. Everyone deserves a second chance, but this is the NFL and second chances are rare. Fantasy wise he is irrelevant even in keeper situations. Vince Young should be forgotten, another QB who had it all but let the opportunity slip.

Expect Favre decision by end of weekend

Reportedly, the Vikings want Favre to make a decision on whether or not he will play by the end of the weekend. We will know for sure if any reports appear that he is having the surgery on his tendon since that is what they are waiting for.

Quincy Carter says he would be Cowboys QB not Romo if....

Jerry Jones would not have kicked off the team publicly citing poor performance and instead would have told the world Quincy had a pot problem. Huh? I think I see his rationality but either way he would not be starting for the Cowboys. What is even more disturbing is that everyone has become so used to athletes going to the pen for worse issues that we all now simply overlook someone who is an addict getting paid millions. Don't get me wrong, pot is really not a big deal, but if you can't keep a career because of it then you have a problem. And no, you would not have beat out Tony Romo Quincy because you sucked and that is the number one reason you aren't playing.

Also in related news, Jeremy Shockey was taken to a Vegas Hospital after being found out cold outside the Hard Rock cafe. Official word is he was dehydrated. Yeah dude, I completely forget to drink water in the middle of a desert all the time and pass out. Give me a break.

Apollo Creed and Strahan to star in new sitcom

I don't know how many people are up on this, but Fox picked up the new show "Brothers" to air at 8pm ET this fall. Starring Michael Strahan and Carl Weathers "Apollo Creed". The Fox people believe Strahan is a "natural" talent and loved the pilot. Why it might work; Strahan has that quirkiness and that signature Walrus smile that may endear people. If the show turns out to be macho men whom are put in awkward situations then hey, maybe it works. Strahan's character is a retired footballer and Weathers is to play his father so who knows. I will watch to give a chance. However, an executive saying he is a natural is the kiss of death. If anyone knows anything it is not the network executives whom are so far removed from talent they would be impressed at a sock puppet show. Not saying Strahan may be great, but let's hope Fox knows comedy still. I just hope this isn't another case of an ex-athlete trying to hold on to the limelight so hard he winds up making a joke of himself. He has done well on sports talk/news shows so I hope it translates to the sitcom.

Quick notes for Wed. 5-20

Bucs Aquib Talib fractured a teammate's face by swinging a helmet meant to strike a different player whom he was fighting with. Must be Steve Smith's brother in law.

Drew Rosenhaus is saying Thomas Jones will report to camp. Is it just me or does this Twitter crap annoy the hell out of you. As if agents needed more exposure. I still would stay away from Jones fantasy wise even if he were to stay with the Jets and win the starting job somehow.

Kurt Warner cleared after hip surgery. I am sorry, but a 38 year old coming off of hip surgery? Not good news for owners of Fitzgerald and Boldin. Keep an eye on this as fantasy season nears. I just can't see him being near as effective as he was last year even without the surgery.

Frank Gore says he will be in the game as long as possible this year and is looking towards getting 90% of the touches. Could be another solid year for Gore, but with no QB does it really matter?

Oakland Raiders Quarterback

Here comes Jeff Garcia! The minute Oakland signed him it was apparent to me that he would own the starting job unless Jamarcus showed up like a first round draft pick for once. It is what Garcia does, accepts a back-up position knowing he will push you and the coaches to a point they will have to re-think who the starter really should be. I'm not saying Jamarcus doesn't deserve time to grow, but has he really shown any leadership qualities that prove he is a franchise QB? The best thing for the Raiders would be to have Garcia take over. He will temper Al Davis' penchant for deep balls (since he can't throw them) and force Oakland to run a more mid range move the chains attack. Combined with their running attack, Garcia is a perfect fit. Of course we'll see if Oakland's O-line shows up, but it it does Oakland MIGHT go .500 or dare I say better? It is still early, but Jamarcus better have an epiphany or next year...With the second pick of the NFL draft the Raiders select....Colt McCoy. Unless there's a punter who runs a 4.2 40.

James Harrison won't go to White House

Saying "It's no big deal" and "If Arizona won he would have invited them" Harrison has decided he won't attend the Steelers trip to D.C. Great rationale numb nuts. No shit Arizona would have been going instead. It is tradition just like receiving a Super Bowl ring. If he really is going to put up like the voice of equality then lets see him refuse to accept his ring under the sense that Arizona would have received them had they won. I think his ignorance did not get that far yet but lets see if he is really that conscience driven. Just come out with the real reason so you don't look so stupid James. 1. Your a Republican 2. You are a hater and think you should have been the first black president 3. You forgot there was an election and thought Bush was still in office.
Picture James when he's pushing 60 and he has his grand kids on his lap..."Grandpa, tell us the story on how you didn't meet history's first African American president again!"

Maroney's injury was a broken bone?

For all you Pats fans and those who took the risk on Laurence Maroney on your fantasy team, we now know why he sucked so bad. As if taking any back in Belicheats system were not already bad enough we know for certain not to rely on anything he releases for public information. This is nothing new but it does confirm what most fantasy players knew already...Stay away from drafting ANY Patriot RB! Now that I said that, watch this year as Fred Taylor rushes for 1,000 yds. and 10 TD's but I doubt it.

By the way, in reference to my previous post on Leon Washington, a four letter network is reporting that the Jets have talked to Seattle about a Thomas Jones for Deion Branch trade. Not saying I am the new swami yet but....

Washington Redskins win trademark battle

The Redskins have won the trademark suit filed against them which means they can keep their name and Native Americans are out of luck if they find it offensive. I have a particular opinion on the matter but it apparently doesn't matter when you consider the following....In a 2004 survey conducted nationally by Pennsylvania's National Annenberg Institute, 91% of Native Americans were cool with the name. This was after SI took it's own poll and had found about 71% did not mind the name. There are plenty of sites headed up by Native Americans whom denounce the word for being a hateful, racist slur. There are also publications by linguists whom state the word was actually used by Native Americans themselves to differentiate from the "white skins". If based on the polls you take the stance that we should move on with the times and not be so sensitive then that's your opinion and you have pretty much polls alone to support it. However, let's just say they did use the word for themselves and found it to be offensive after realizing it was being used as a negative term. Even with the majority not really caring according to surveys does it still make it right? Would we be okay having a team in 200 years labeled after any other minority slur (given or created)?

Debate over Vick reinstatement

PFT is running a blog posing this same question. They seem to think that another year in the pen is what Michael Vick deserves and then he should be considered based on how he handles himself. Now, I know that what he did is horrible and to take advantage of an animal is paramount to doing the same to a child. I get it, but isn't something a bit off here? Does anyone remember not that long ago Ray Lewis was part of a murder investigation? That is until he turned rat on his two buddies in exchance for a obstruction of justice charge. Last I checked he is lounging in Hawaii during Pro Bowls, pimped out on commercials, and is considered a "mentor" to other players around the league. Every other week another meat head abandons his car after driving drunk (Tank) or gets nailed with a DWI (Lynch). Lets not even go PacMan whom was reinstated after a few run-ins. These guys are putting human lives at risk each and every time they leave the club after "making it rain". These are only the incidents we know about. The man did his time so let him be.

Delaware Legalizes Sports Betting

Finally, someone in elected office uses their brain! Gov. Jack Martell made it official today and the NFL is ready for their appeal. The NFL is focusing on the language of "chance" stating that the game relies heavily on skill and not random luck. They do have a point, although this is nothing more than a debate over semantics.

News of value around the league for Thursday 5-14

Arizona- Reid says Zona wanted a 1,3,and 5 for Boldin. Too much coupled with the salary he will demand.

Atlanta- Tony Gonzalez seems to have found the fountain of youth since joining the falcons, grabbing every throw his way and using his body with reckless abandon. We'll see if that's the case come week 7 but you gotta love the guy.

Baltimore- Receiver Kelley Washington signed with Baltimore.

Buffalo- The T.O. show is in town ready to record his each and every sit up, tear, and dropped pass. Does anyone actually care? Somebody explain to him what over exposure means.

Carolina- Other than Peppers not showing no news.

Chicago- SI reported Bears are 4th in power rankings and everyone is goo-goo over Cutler. Just one problem...he still has nobody to throw to! It's like taking Viagra and staying home alone.

Cincinnati- See previous post.

Denver- Shannon Sharpe inducted to Broncos "Ring of Fame".

Detroit- The Detroit Free Press is calling the Lions the new "America's Team". Fitting since we're in a recession.

Miami- Boldin says he "would love to play in Miami". At this point Boldin is the girl who pulls you to the dance floor, lets you buy her a couple drinks and then tells you she's married.

Minnesota- Favre, Favre, Favre. Of all the rumors, you know this has the best chance of happening. So what if he has a bicep tear. The look on Packer fan when he shows up in Green Bay alone would be priceless.

NY Giants- Hakeem Nicks may be the best rookie to come out of the draft. An immediate role as a starter, loved by coaches, and the physical tools to succeed make him a scary proposition.

NY Jets- Leon Washington's agent posted on Twitter that talks with the Jets are on a better track towards resolution.

Oakland- Heyward-Bey did not have the camp he wanted and is not impressing coaches. It is quite early to be too critical but you have to feel for the guy. Think there's any pressure on him? Also, rumors are starting to fly that Garcia will be the starter come August and not Russel. Garcia is a competitor and can actually be a savior for this team. Forget Al Davis' passion for the deep ball. A great mid-range passer, Garcia can keep linebackers from stacking the line and allow the Raiders run game some lanes if the O-line shows up.

Seattle- Holmgren tells AM Radio station he is coming back in 2010.

Tampa Bay- Luke McCown believes the starting job is his to lose. Even if he does win the competition, how long until Morris pulls the plug and gives the job to his beloved Freeman. McCown will have to manage the game well and put up W's in order to hold on.

Bengals will be subject of the HBO seires "Hard Knocks"

Has there ever been a more fitting title associated with the Bengals? Prison Orange...check...Repeat offenders...check...13 arrests in two years...check. Burglary, Vandalism, DUI, Resisting Arrest, Domestic Violence, you want it they got it. I wonder who will win the time slot, Hard Knocks or Law and Order? The only thing better would be T.O. having his own reality show.

NFL considers second Europe game

The NFL is now considering not one but two games to be played overseas. Nice...we've already had the major companies outsource jobs overseas and now the NFL? Way to shit all over your fan base!
1) Is there compensation for the home team's season ticket holders whom lose out? Last I checked season ticket prices were rising.
2) Has anyone watched the previous NFL in the UK game and thought, wow, it is great watching a bunch of corporate Euro's strap on my gear and act interested. Hey, is my plasma dying or is that freaking fog?
3) How about the poor dude who slaves away at his job and talked his wife into getting out to watch a game with the guys. He saves up and is jacked up ready to go to the next home game..."oh, shit, this one is in Bulgaria. I'll do the next one....Next one is sold out?" and so it goes, family issues, etc. and he never gets to go to a game this year. Is it just me or in such a short season (for us anyway) does every home game mean something to us? No wonder the commish wants to shorten the preseason and lengthen the regular season. If this is the case he better.
4) How about poor dude who lives out of state and the one time his team is supposed to come to town it's 7,000 miles away.

I know it sound like a bitch rant but wait and see till it happens to you.

Fantasy impact:Leon Washington holding out of Jets camp...for now.

Although mandatory camp doesn't start until next month, the Jets have a major issue on their hands. Both Washington and Jones are holding out for more money and eventually I believe one of them will have to go. It won't be the old and overrated one either. The Jets are apparently happy with their new rookie RB and given that Jones will most likely be the more stubborn hold out due to age, I see them eventually parting ways with him and giving Washington the money and the starting job. This would be good news for all you dynasty leaguers who picked Jones up last year and were smart enough to keep him on your rosters. Washington is too good and is that versatile back teams crave for. Even if the two eventually return to camp, Washington will undoubtedly be the starter next year. Combine that with a year under Sanchez's belt in Ryan's system and you have a top tier back for the next 4 years.

New Cowboys Stadium to be named...Cowboys Stadium???

Apparently, corporate sponsorship for the new Cowboys stadium is coming in slow. Hmmm.......I wonder if the recent collapse of their practice "dome" has anything to do with it? Think the potential suitors are being tedious in checking who the architechts were on the new stadium?
