Tuesday 3-16-10

Big Dick Vermeil says that Larry Johnson will take over Portis' lead back duties. You know, he is absolutely right too. Shanny parted with Portis in Denver on bad terms and to bring a guy like LJ in doesn't speak highly of Shanny's confidence going in. Maybe he just wants Portis to have some competition to motivate him, or maybe he still is holding on to the Denver feud.

Jamarcus Russell is reported to have slimmed down and changed his mechanics. As I have said all along, as long as he is behind center this team is doomed for mediocrity at best. Now having said that, I will give him up to game one of the pre-season before I change my stance. Remember, his weight and his mechanics are not the issue here. It's his HEAD! He lacks the leadership, discipline, ethic, and smarts to compete on this level. Maybe he has seen a shrink and worked on the most important aspects, but I don't care how good he looks, lets see what decisions he makes. The biggest problem here is Al Davis. Think he had a nice talk with Jamarcus in the off-season and gave some serious ass chewing? Yeah, if Al hates one thing, it's being wrong. Next up, Davis hires a Sweedish doctor to transplant Sasquatch hands onto Heyward-Bey.

Talk about the draft changing! With all the recent moves, the draft prospects are being shuffled around. Not to mention the possible team shuffling which may occur once trades are completed.

Further Proof the NFL becoming a "Corporation" is bad

Following the footsteps of the Packers, the Bucs have hired former White House mouthpiece Ari Fleischer to help spin the franchises movements (or lack thereof). When teams need to hire a guy of this caliber, it speaks volumes to their willingness to deceive fans and do whatever it takes to get away with keeping costs down yet raising ticket prices, merchandise, and in turn making it harder for us the consumer to enjoy our favorite sport. If the NFL becomes a corporation and continue to follow a business model as such, it will only be a matter of time before you see the results. The gap between the richest and poorest will grow, and how your ownership decides to practice their business will dramatically affect performance. At least under the former contract teams had to spend 100 million at minimum to ensure competition. Throw that out the window if the American Needle case passes.

LT to the Jets and Quinn to Denver

Wow, a lot of movement!
Obviously L.T. took the Jet job since this is where he will get the most playing time. Leon Washington is no lock to be with the team come the season and the Jets would be left with one second year RB. Dare I say it, but this has all the signs of a career ressurection. He will get touches, I'm guessing 12-15 a game and most likely will be the featured goal line back. With a great line and some decent pass threats, LT may just thrive and squeeze another two seasons of great productivity out. The only problem is how will he respond to the cold weather? Dude played in the south in college and then in sunny San Diego. We will see if the old joints can hold up. I believe he becomes a solid number 3 in fantasy.

Quinn to Denver is very interesting. I don't expect much out of him, especially from a fantasy perspective, but here he has a change to claim the job. However, he has Nobody to throw to if Marshall takes off. Still, he would fit the system and could be a long term answer.

Big Ben

Of course everyone knows the allegations at this point of Ben's alleged rape of a 20 year old girl. Unlike the Tahoe incident, this girl went immediately to police and the hospital. Think anyone filing a fake complaint would do that? Mmmm, no. My question is what is the NFL going to do about this? Everyone knows the NFL likes to drag it's feet when it comes to discipline, but in this instance I really hope the guy gets suspended even if he simply settles out of court. This is the SECOND time he's been pointed out as a rapist, and if this were any other guy out there he would have been held until police had a DNA test and indicted immediately. This is as sick as it gets and dude obviously has problems. So what police were with him. Think they were gonna cock block him. He's hoping this will get him off the hook, and it just may. Yeah, MAYBE he just ran into two chicks who saw money signs....err, no. Look at his actions (motorcycle incident) and he has the reputation as a ladies man to begin with. Money should not be allowed to make this one go away. Dude is a pro football player hanging at college clubs? In any other walk of life we call this a Pedophile. But since he's a ball player, he's just having fun. C'mon Son!

What the latest FA moves mean to Fantasy

Anquan Boldin, Baltimore: Now a legitimate #1, Boldin's poor showing fantasy wise last year will easily be forgotten. Derrick Mason's push for more money just bit him in the ass and it's unlikely Baltimore will re-sign him. Mason was a great number two fantasy wise and Boldin should well surpass his production because he is more of a red-zone threat that Mason is. I would immediately place Boldin in the top 12 this year. In keeper leagues he is now a no brainer. Auction wise, while everyone overpaid for his value last year, it may be worth keeping him on board this year even if it does cost you 40 dollars in a 200 dollar cap league. Yes it will hurt but you're gonna pay that same amount to re-sign him once the bidding starts.

Antonio Cromartie, Jets: As if the Jets were'nt already expected to be a top Defense, I think they are the surefire top pick this year. Problem is, will they be on the field too long now that their best back is gone? Definitely top five regardless, but will they be worth an 8th round pick which should be where you can jump the gun?

Nate Burleson, Detroit: This helps Kevin Smith's value (if healthy), Stafford, and Megatron. Teams will still double up on Calvin which should allow Burleson to see a lot of single coverage. With his speed and length, this could be dangerous. Detroit has built a better team over night and maybe even a contender. Believe it or not, I put Burleson as a top second tier WR for fantasy maybe even lower 1st tier. I know it's pushing it, but consider he was the only passing threat past John Carlson at TE. He still put up numbers and was outperforming TJ Houshmendazeh. Now with a serious number #1 in Calvin the opportunities are there.

Chester Taylor, Bears: I would not be surprised at all to see Chester surpass Forte this year. He is exactly the type of back Martz loves and who do you think probably pushed for him? Forte is a good back but after an unproductive season and given what Chester has done in limited work behind AP, I believe Chester is the next Michael Turner after Turner left the shadow of LT. I actually might believe Chester is the better pick than Forte. However it's a risky one because Forte has talent and could rise to the challenge. A great #3 back for now but may pay off much higher.

Brandon Marshall: Looks like Seattle is the destination, and although this is a great potential signing, fantasy wise I think TJ might wind up as the better value. Remember what he did in Cinci? Ocho would gain the yards and he would scavenge the TD's. A player like Marshall will get his fair share but given Housh should go in the fifth to sixth rounds or come relatively cheap in auctions, I believe he will give more bang for the buck. What this could do for the old man behind center could make Matt a top ten QB.

FREE AGENCY TIME

Seattle Seahawks going strong after Brandon Marshall. WOW! they need to do this after letting Burleson leave. Good move if they get him. Look for an outsider to sweep out of nowhere and snag him. News is he leaves to Seattle tomorrow so watch for agressive chasing from Baltimore.

T.O. is visiting Cinci after Coles gets the as. I really believe this tandem would be lethal with Carson Palmer back there. Add a decent TE to the mix and Cinci is Super Bowl contender.

Chicago Bears are pushin baby. Julius Peppers and Chester Taylor!!!! wow. Talk about most improved team. Problem is, Cutler still has no number one receiver. Peppers COST $$$$40 million in first three years! ouch!

Detroit signing Nate Burleson and Van de Bosch. Two amazing moves where they needed it. Now they can address the line play. If they draft Suh or McCoy this team could be most improved and a....contend--- No way, really?

Aaron Kampman will be an Eagle. They need him way too bad and will not leave him leave the building. If he does, then who knows where he can land. Too many teams need him.

Antrelle Rolle most likely becomes a Giant.

Anquan Boldin will be dealt. I think teams like Baltimore, Seattle, Tampa, St. Louis, Buffallo, NY Giants will go hard and show the Cardinal the money. Jerry Mguire all over again.

Carlos Dansby still at large. Miami is said to be landing spot and makes most sense.

WR Kevin Walter also a huge interest to those teams looking for a WR. If Broncos deal Marshall, look for them to get into the mix for Boldin and Walter.

Bucs show interest in Willie Parker. Yeah Radio, great youth movement ya douche!!!!!!! Horrible signing if they get him.

Atlanta looks like they have Dunta Robinson CB from Houston. Their biggest weakspot was secondary. So a great move.

QB David Carr visiting the 49ers. Now they will have 3 has beens possibly.

New Overtime possibility being discussed

Like they can agree on anything right now, but the Players Union and the NFL are talking about new OT rules in the playoff's which would give both teams a chance...kind of. If the coin flip winning team takes the ball and only gets a field goal then the opposition gets a crack at scoring a touchdown. If the coin flip winning team scores a TD then it's over. Huh?????? Better, than what's in place but here's another idea.

The Pro Bowl winners division automatically wins the flip in the Super Bowl.
If you wanna get really crafty:
In divisional play, the team who had more Pro Bowl players the previous year would win the toss. If a tie, then whichever teams players amassed the most total scores, then yardage would determine. A little nuts I know, but let's make the Pro Bowl mean something. Enough with players taking every play off, using it as a party on our dime. Baseballs game is now competitive and enjoyable. Let's do the same.

Combine Observations

Gerald McCoy is now under scrutiny for only dropping 23 reps on bench press. Suh put up 32 and everyone now has "red flags" up on Mccoy. Blah! Let him fall to number three, I dare you!

Speaking of number 3, the Bucs found a way to embarrass themselves off the field after the season is over. They asked Myron Rolle how he felt about deserting his team for Oxford. Radio Raheem responded after all the bad press today by saying basically, yo, we were just playin man, I would've done the same if it were my son. Then Raheem took a step back and chest bumped Myron.....yeah, come play for me!

NFL inviting 2nd rounders to Draft for prime time viewing. Yet another sign that the NFL is becoming too powerful and need to meet the players halfway. 1st and 2nd rounds have gone primetime on Thursday and Friday night. So they are inviting expected 2nd round picks to the draft for camera time on their dime. I say if these rookies are players players they should boycott the whole thing, embarass the NFL and then publicly denounce the lack of an agreement.

In a draft this deep with DT and OT I think nobody trades up this year. The top four will get what they need at their spots and the cheap owners at those spots need to open their pockets. Makes no sense does it? Year after year, it's the same teams there because they are too cheap to build a winner, yet they wind up spending the money anyway with their high draft picks. No wonder they want a rookie salary cap in the new contract. SMH!
